Herman Announces Retirement, Albert Named Artistic Director

After 31 years of dedication and a commitment to excellence, Harold “Hal” Herman, founder and producing artistic director of Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, has announced his retirement, accepting the new position of artistic director emeritus.

Herman had long dreamt of a summer stick theatre company that would provide the Conservatory’s students an opportunity to work in a professional setting before venturing out to pursue their own careers.  His dream became a reality in 1984, when Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre presented its first season of four fully-staged musicals.

Shenandoah Conservatory’s dean Michael Stepniak has named long-time music director Thomas Albert as artistic director.  “I am thrilled to be carrying on Hal’s legacy, and we are all excited about the future of SSMT,” says Albert, who has been with the theatre since its inception in 1984.  “We have a wonderfully engaged audience base here in Winchester and beyond, and we’re looking forward to continuing to provide the quality and caliber of theatre that they have come to expect.” Read more here.

You can support Herman’s vision by contributing to Shenandoah University endowments including the Harold Herman SSMT Endowment Fund and/or the Harold Herman Chair in Music Theatre.
